The Popocatepetl volcano sharply intensified on the night of Tuesday March 19 and threw clouds of ash and gas to a great height. The National Civil Defense Service of Mexico encourages residents to take extra precautions and not to approach the crater of the volcano due to possible ash fallout. Approaching the mouth of a volcano is strictly prohibited. The volcano Popocatepetl has erupted several times in recent years, in 1996 an eruption killed five climbers.
