Webcam at the Monument to the Scuttled Ships in Sevastopol

Live webcam shows the Monument to the Scuttled Ships in Sevastopol city, the architectural symbol of the hero city established at the Kornilov Embankment, near Primorsky Boulevard near Nakhimov Square (in the very center of Sevastopol). The silhouette of the Monument to the Scuttled Ships is used as the emblem of Sevastopol city.

In the background of the broadcast from the webcam, one more monument of the city is seen - «Bayonet and Sail», which is located on the cape in Crystal Bay of Sevastopol. It was from this cape that the first salute was given in honor of the end of the Defense of Sevastopol (1941-1942) during the Second World War. The monument is engraved with the order on awarding the city, and the awards are the Order of Lenin and the Red Star.

History of the Monument to the Scuttled Ships

The Monument to the Scuttled Ships was built in 1905 to mark the 50th anniversary of the First Defense of Sevastopol, during which Russian sailing ships were flooded, «to block the entrance of enemy ships to the raid and thereby save Sevastopol» (Pavel Nakhimov). September 11, 1854 across the fairway, between the Konstantinovskaya and Aleksandrovskaya batteries, seven obsolete ships were flooded: the frigates «Sizopol», «Flora», the ships «Uriel», «Three Saints», «Silistria», «Selafail», «Varna». After the autumn-winter storms, due to the partial destruction of this obstacle, in November-December the ship «Gabriel», the merchant vessel and the corvette «Pilad» were additionally flooded. In February 1855, from the Mikhailovsky Fort on the North side to the Nikolaev Battery, a second line of masts emerged from the water on the south - six more vessels were flooded: the ships «Twelve Apostles», «Rostislav», «Svyatoslav», frigates «Cahul», «Messembria», «Media». On August 27, 1855, when the defenders left the South side, the rest of the fleet was flooded in the bay. The fire of coastal batteries and flooded ships made Sevastopol Bay inaccessible to the Anglo-French fleet.
