Cumbre Vieja volcano webcam, La Palma, Canary Islands
Live webcam shows the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain in real time. Cumbre Vieja is an active volcanic ridge on the island of La Palma. This ridge stretches from north to south, covering the southern third of the island and on the territory of which there are a number of volcanic craters.
On September 19, 2021, an eruption began, which led to the evacuation of the settlements of El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane.
Authorities had begun evacuating the infirm and some farm animals from surrounding villages before the eruption at 3:15 p.m. (1415 GMT) on a wooded slope in the sparsely populated Cabeza de Vaca area, according to the islands' government.
Two hours later, with rivers of lava edging down the hillside, the municipality issued a mandatory evacuation order for four villages, including El Paso and Los Llanos de Aridane. Soldiers were deployed to help, and residents were asked to keep mobile phone use to a minimum.
On the live webcam, fountains of red molten lava rushing into the sky were visible, and clouds of smoke were seen from all over the island. The operator periodically changes the camera angle, directing it to the nearest settlement to the volcano.
